The design is transformed by using the traditional Chinese opera costume, with a western trench coat plus Chinese one-line buttons and lattice pattern cloud shoulders. The lattice pattern has been widely used in the jacquard textile pattern of ancient Chinese silk Jacquard, which is a soft collision of culture and contemporary fashion. The blue lattice patterned fluttering belt is sewn at the waist, making the design a Chinese style tunic with big sleeves. The first design is inspired by hand-painted birds and flowers on white silk wallpaper from the Qing Dynasty. The pattern of the dress focuses on the red and green birds and flowers, making the birds and flowers come to life.
This design showcases a beige satin fabric as the main material, drawing inspiration from the embroidered floral and bird pattern curtains of the ”Baosheng Chang“ brand in ”A Tale of Three Cities.“ The embroidered pieces, presented as a pair, feature motifs that are similar yet uniquely adorned, creating a picturesque scene on the model. Additionally, the stand-up collar, cuffs, and hem of the skirt are accentuated with embellishments of brown silk embroidered shawls with intricate floral patterns, vibrant and colourful. This artwork resembles a fairy that has traversed from ancient times to the present, exuding a fresh and elegant ethereal charm, conveying a sense of grandeur without being vulgar. To align with the androgynous theme of ”Farewell My Concubine,“ the silhouette adopts wide-sleeved robes, suitable for both men and women to wear.
The outer coat adopts the traditional wide-sleeved robe style, adorned with traditional Chinese black and gold floral patterns, featuring elements such as dragons and birds to showcase the resilience and strength of the male characters. This design seamlessly blends culture and fashion, preserving traditional characteristics while presenting a unique visual effect that highlights nobility and luxury.
